What is Skilled Nursing Care?

Skilled nursing care is professional medical care that is needed to address certain health-related conditions. This kind of care can only be provided by licensed medical professionals, such as registered nurses. Typically, a doctor will prescribe skilled nursing care for patients attempting to recover from a stroke, heart attack, major surgery, or respiratory illness. For seniors suffering from memory-related or age-related conditions, skilled nursing care may be needed on a permanent, full-time basis.

Licensed nurses and therapists can offer rehabilitative services to help patients recover as much of their health and mobility as possible. These services include:

Physical Therapy – A program of special exercises and movements designed to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility. A rehab team creates individualized plans tailored to the unique needs of each patient.

Occupational Therapy – Involves exercises centered around daily tasks such as dressing, writing, balancing, and self regulating. OT is used to treat problems with motor skills and physical coordination.

Speech Therapy – Used to address problems with speech and swallowing. Exercises target the muscles in the mouth and throat to improve communication or eating. Speech therapists may also recommend special diets that can aid oral function.

Other services include:

  • Convalescent care
  • Wound care
  • Intravenous (IV) therapy
  • Vital sign monitoring

Skilled nursing facilities, including Pasadena Nursing Center, are regulated and certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). These facilities also have transfer agreements with local hospitals in case residents require emergency care. Patients who are referred to a CMS-certified facility for care can often get Medicaid or Medicare to cover at least some of the cost.
